NPPL Denver: Wer spielt in den Finals

#1

24.07.2005 17:04

NPPL Denver, S7 Saturday Results

Here are the pro teams that will be gracing us with their grace and charm tomorrow morning in order of seed:
1) Sacramento XSV
2) Portland Naughty Dogs
3) Los Angeles Infamous
4) DC Arsenal
5) San Diego Dynasty
6) New England Hurricanes
7) Oakland Empire
8) San Francisco Avalanche

As we all surely know by now Sunday starts everyone with a clean slate, and how these guys get here has little bearing on where they’ll end up. Dynasty is a quality example of this, it’s hard to count the Dragons out just because they landed (shock, horror) fifth place; these boys are widely known for stepping it up when it counts the most.

How about those ‘Dogs- huh? Rocky Knuth has done a bang-up job of keeping this team from cracking up, and boy do they look every bit as scary as they ever have. Smoothing over the bumpy spots and filling the holes on the roster with Portland locals has kept the chemistry bubbling and it showed as they pounded their peers all day long. If they can maintain the intensity and momentum they’ve built up there’s no reason they couldn’t be fighting for the top spot come Sunday afternoon.

The Naughty Dogs did hit an obstacle today though, one in the form of a hurricane (wait for it), the New England Hurricane!… uh, Hurricanes. Jeff Stein’s funny-accented group dealt those bad dogs their only loss of the day in fine fashion while having an overall outstanding day themselves, giving the appearance that these right coasters are once more on the upswing. Mr. Stein was very pleased with the Naughty Dogs win especially as he admitted a deep admiration for the team’s alpha male, Rocky. Jeff considers him a mentor, “Which obviously makes this win that much more special.” This squad is still realizing its vast potential and the more these guys get that taste of the finals the harder it’s going to be to keep them away.

Let’s go ahead and skip to the big question: will the Denver event be XSV’s first stateside victory? I told Nicky Cuba to kill someone for me this morning and it seems he may have fulfilled my request a couple times over. What’s it going to take with this bunch though? They blast and fight and scrape all weekend, but they’re always coming up short. Although they may just pull it off tomorrow if only to make all the magazines and websites shut up about it.

Many people have been wondering, myself included, who can take Dynasty down, and the way some of these teams have fought so far, it’s possible we could have our answer as soon as tomorrow. Stay tuned.

In Semi Pro the All Americans made their return to the NPPL known by beating every single team they played, coming in second only to their NXL brethren Shock. It’s not difficult to imagine a Tampa/Strange-esque finish for the Americans, swooping in and snatching up the cash in their first appearance of the year.

Speaking of Strange, they came into Denver as a definite favorite, especially after the show they put on at the Buccaneers stadium, but it simply never came together for them this weekend. Even with the cut opening to 16 teams here Strange just weren’t themselves and continued to stumble today starting with two losses before bouncing back with wins over Doc's Raiders and Redz Infamy. It proved to be too little, too late though for this round. Strange is looking to make that end of the year bump to the Pro division, and if it’s to happen, they need to show up to San Diego with their heads on straight. There’s no question they can jostle one of the top three loose in this division, right now it’s just a matter of them doing it.

For all you wannabe’s out there, you’ll be elated to know that HK have mysteriously kept it together for an entire two days so far and have dealt out some serious devastation dropping only a single game in Division I prelims. Could they have turned over a new leaf and decided to try to actually win an event? We shall see in the morning, I suppose, just how much the party boys really want this one.

Have to say though, this is Farside’s event to lose, call it a hunch. There’s no doubt every team, all the way down to the Texas Storm boys in the bottom of the cut, will be playing their posteriors off tomorrow, but Farside are so good at adapting to the finals climate, the constant field rotation from Quarters to Semis to Finals, I see them eeking out another victory here at Invesco. And if I’m wrong, then that’s what the ‘edit’ button at the bottom of the page is for.

And as far as corrections go, let me say that Owen Ronayne was not the mysterious Englishman in the announcers’ booth yesterday, so please do not send him nasty e-mails… even though it’s altogether possible he deserves it. You could pay the WDP/Angel tent a visit tomorrow though and check out the gorgeous new Arsenal G7’s on show, along with the usual eye-candy WDP is world renown for.

Stay tuned to P8ntballer.com for Sunday’s thrills and spills as we see just who wants those series points the most. Also check out www.nppl.tv for all the scores of all your faves.
